A big thanks to the ocean rowers of the Talisker Whiskey Challenge of 2019!
We, as a nonprofit organization, owe a big thank you to the heroes who support us every day. Today, we’re putting the spotlight on two rowing teams — the Ocean 5 and Team Maktub — who raised money for us by embarking on extraordinary journeys of physical and mental exertion to increase awareness for the pressing issue of plastic pollution.
Kevin, Matt, Will, Chris, and Sam of the Ocean 5 broke the world record for the fastest team of 5 to row across the Atlantic Ocean unaided. They accomplished the 3,000 mile (about 4,800km) journey as part of the Talisker Whiskey Challenge of 2019 in just 23 days, 19 hours, and 50 minutes. Their epic voyage was undertaken “to raise awareness and support the fight against the scourge of plastic in the oceans with the Plastic Soup Foundation.” To train for this feat, the team rowed over 4,000km, ran more than 3,000 km, lifted more than 1.5 million kilos, and cycled over 8,000 kilometers. A big thank you to the Ocean 5 team, and well done!
The second team, TeamMaktub is composed of just 1 rower: Carl Plasschaert, who was supported by his family and close friends in his journey across the Atlantic Ocean, also as part of the Talisker Whiskey Challenge. The name “Maktub” might be familiar to those who have read The Alchemist — the book tells of an epic journey which is characterized by storms and setbacks galore. “Maktub” means “it is written”, and this idea motivated Carl to start his journey into the unknown by rowing solo across the Atlantic. Carl will raise money for us by selling his boat in spring 2020, and for this, we are very grateful!
We are proud to have been a part of these two incredible journeys and are thankful to them for choosing to support and raise awareness for the Plastic Soup Foundation.
